Mapambano - Struggle in Swahili
As a child growing up in Kenya I was fascinated by the African Buffalo and Lion. The struggle of these titans seemed to be closer to the heart of a universe that is in harmony with an indifferent courage. The vivid feelings arising to the sounds and sights at dawn in the African Savanna mixed with the edge and fierceness of nature's glare. A hybrid of beauty and cruelty. To this day their struggle with each other and with life still holds a place in my imagination. The African Leopard as well. The African Leopard is "the one that stands alone" in that it thrives solo in the darkest night of Africa.
"What is life? It is the flash of a firefly in the night. It is the breath of a buffalo in the
wintertime. It is the little shadow which runs across the grass and loses itself in the sunset."
Chief Crowfoot, Blackfoot Indian Chief
"Life has meaning only in the struggle. Triumph or defeat is in the hands of the Gods. So let us celebrate the struggle!" Swahili Warrior Song
