Some people are offended by religion and some people are offended by those who have no religion. Some people are offended by your particular political views.
Either way it is important not to resort to violence but to use your brain as a weapon in a debate in the free market of ideas. To be strong enough to handle those who are critical of you for your beliefs or lack of beliefs without resorting to violence.
That is why I was disappointed to see Dr. Zbigniew Brzezinski give some legitimacy and justification to the terrorists in Paris by stating:
"we must avoid being provocative and unnecessarily nasty because some forms of humor directed at for example the Prophet in recent times in some publications in Europe were extraordinarily provocative... it doesn't do any harm to be measured even in humor and to avoid engaging in forms of humor and sardonic or whatever that then becomes profoundly offensive to the deepest religious motivations of people who are insecure, who are confronting modernity for the first time, who easily interpret slights into offensive, intolerable acts and can then be swept up by a fanatical movement...One of the most important things in my mind is to avoid becoming the number one enemy of the fanatics."
Brzezinski is being patronizing to the many Muslims who do and can handle criticism without violence.
Also it is a dishonor to the Muslims who are being slaughtered by the takfiri zealots. Let the Muslim Kurds and Shia be the ones to shed their blood as if the zealots will be content with their blood alone.
There is diversity in Islam from Sufi, Shia, and various Sunni sects. And most Muslims do not resort to violence or this extremism so why give these fanatical killers legitimacy by honoring their line in blood.
Is Brzezinski going to decide what is humor? Is he the ultimate arbiter on humor? Is Brzezinski going to be the ultimate judge on what is provocative? Or is he just going to let the fanatics set the rules and draw the line on what is provocative. The fanatics are drawing the line in blood and Brzezinski is going to honor it?
It would be like defending a violent rape and blaming it on the woman for going to a party with the wrong clothes. Do not dress provocatively you know.
Brzezinski stated people should avoid being provocative and use common sense but any march of progress has been from people being provocative. It was provocative for the American founders to break away from the British Empire and they picked up a revolutionary common sense not a Brzezinski bureaucratic common sense that protects the status quo.
It was provocative and against the common sense at the time for Martin Luther King Jr. to march to Selma, Alabama. It was provocative for Rosa Parks to refuse to sit in the back of the bus. It made some people upset and resort to violence but it was necessary to move society towards a more free and just society.
Brzezinski claims to be the champion of common sense but instead he enables the fanatics to draw the line in blood. He wants people to avoid what is provocative and avoid the wrath of the fanatics. He fails to appreciate the diversity in Islam and the Middle East and how being provocative is part of movements for change.
It is provocative for the liberal Saudi blogger Raif Badawi to stand up for free speech and be critical of the clerics. It is provocative for Iranian women to start an online movement called my Stealthy Freedom. There are Arabs, Kurds, and Persians that carry the liberty and courage banner that Brzezinski cannot recognize.
Brzezinski wants common sense and what is called for right now is uncommon courage unless you are just interested in the status quo.
Do you fault the Algerian author Kamel Daoud who has a fatwa against him for retelling Albert Camus's work from an Algerian perspective? Is Kamel Daoud too provocative and should we look to the fanatics to tell us that?
Brzezinski prides himself on being a realist and pragmatist but he shows himself to be ignorant of the diversity of Islam and the maturity of the many Muslims who can handle free speech. He also shows himself to be void of any principles with only a bureaucratic shell.
I honor the thousands of Muslim, Yazidi, Christian, and Secular dead in Syria and Iraq who have been murdered by the Takfiri zealots and who never drew a provocative cartoon but by their very existence they were an offense to Totalitarian Takfiris.
Brzezinski was one of the ones who advised to let Assad survive and murder Syrians in the hundreds of thousands including chemical weapons on civilians. Assad's crimes unanswered have inspired more Jihadi activity than cartoons. The Islamists and Jihadists filled the vacuum when the moderates were crushed by Assad as the world watched.
Shame on Brzezinski who dishonors liberty and Muslims who honor liberty. The Wahhabi and Takfiri fundamentalists are not the sole arbiters of Islamic thought so why cater to their demands?
The ones who really blaspheme the prophet are not the cartoonists but those who murder civilians in his name.
There should be no abdication to this threat on freedom of expression and freedom of thought.
The brave Kurdish fighters battling the Takfiri zealots on the front lines are the ones worthy of the mantle of Voltaire and Thomas Paine's revolutionary spirit not the policy bureaucrats in Washington DC who have underestimated the threat and have underestimated the courage and honor of Muslims and non Muslims who fight for Liberte'.
The Islamic State wants to be feared, to be taken seriously, and to pass for the representative of pure Islam. The US media is all to happy to oblige. Others in the Muslim world show it the contempt it deserves.

The problem with Wahhabi and Salafi fundamentalism
"Declaring others as deviants from "the one true divine path" is a universal phenomenon, found in all religions. In Islam, Takfiris are the self-appointed guardians of "true Islam." Takfiris proclaim that Muslims who do not follow a specific version of Shariah are Kafirs (non-believers), and not Muslims. They oppose the spiritually generous viewpoint that many paths lead to God and that there could be honest diversity within the same religion. Militant Takfiris use violence to enforce "true Islam." Ahmadis, Shias, and even Sufi-Sunnis are ambushed and killed because these groups, according to Takfiris, have corrupted "true Islam." Sufi shrines are bombed as places set against Shariah."
